Faculty Mentoring

Mentoring

We are deeply committed to your success. Toward that end, we provide you with ongoing career development and personal support. In addition, we take pride in our ability to respond quickly and effectively to resident suggestions and comments so that the program can be continuously improved.

Career Development

From the beginning of internship, we educate our residents about the array of opportunities available in pediatrics. This includes careers in general pediatrics and subspecialties locally, nationally, and worldwide. We utilize the expertise of our faculty to help mentor residents toward their career goals. Once a career path has been chosen, we then work diligently to facilitate optimal placement after residency, whether in fellowship training, research, or practice.

Meetings with the Program Directors

The program directors meet with each resident twice a year. This time is set aside to review residents’ evaluations, discuss future plans, and address any issues or concerns on a one-on-one basis. These personalized sessions are a great way for residents to get feedback and discuss their personal and professional goals and achievements.

Weekly Resident Meetings

The weekly Resident Meeting is an informal discussion that allows the program directors and chief resident to keep up with issues that are important to the residents, keeps our residents informed and involved in the issues that affect them, and provides a forum for a discussion of stressors that are common to any residency program.

Retreats

Each year, the program directors and chief resident hold a class retreat for each group of residents. These retreats allow residents time to get together as a class and discuss issues of importance. Topics usually include team-building, stress management, leadership skills, and career planning. The retreats also include a social activity for residents and their families/significant others.

In addition, the program holds an annual resident and faculty retreat to review key aspects of the program. During this retreat we focus on two to three important topics selected jointly by residents and faculty, such as creating a night float system to ease the post call burden placed on residents and strategies to enhance the subspecialty experiences during the second year. Many of our most significant and innovative changes in the residency program have come out of these retreats.
